July 27th, 2023 marked the beginning of this unforgettable RV road trip for my family and me, this trip took in 5 parks over 13 days, starting and end at Suwannee River State Park, driving a round trip total of 1,096 miles.

We went to Suwannee River State park (1 night), Florida Caverns State Park (4 nights), Big Lagoon State Park (3 nights), Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park (2 nights) and back to Suwannee River State park (3 nights). We also popped over State lines for a veterinarian trip to Georgia for Winston and a day trip into Alabama to visit the Gulf State Park.

An Unforgettable Retreat at Suwannee River State Park: Discovering Nature, History, and Serenity

Our 1096-mile RV road trip began with a magical night at Suwannee River State Park and I’m excited to share the wonderful time spent that my wife, Helen, and I experienced there, accompanied by our beloved four-legged companions, Winston and Suze. Nestled amidst a majestic pine forest, this hidden gem provided us with the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Join me as I recount the adventures we had, from exploring historical landmarks to discovering nature’s hidden treasures.

An Enchanting Arrival:
Our journey began with a captivating entryway, surrounded by the awe-inspiring grandeur of the huge pine forest. The sight of the majestic trees standing tall against the horizon filled us with a sense of wonder and tranquility, setting the stage for an enchanting getaway.

A Perfect Home Base:
We were fortunate to secure site 20 in the full hookup campground, which proved to be one of the best spots in the area. With only 30 sites available, the campground offered a serene and intimate atmosphere, allowing us to connect with nature on a deeper level. The decision not to use the shower/bathroom facilities was an easy one, as the comfort of our own space and the breathtaking surroundings made our stay truly memorable.

Journeys Along Nature’s Trails:
The park’s extensive trail system beckoned us to explore its hidden wonders. We embarked on leisurely walks along the river, leading us to the picturesque Little Gem Spring Overlook. The captivating view of the spring’s crystal-clear waters was a sight to behold, reminding us of the natural beauty that thrives within this sanctuary. Our adventure continued to the Balanced Rock, a unique geological wonder that left us in awe of the forces of nature.

Unveiling the Past:
Delving into the park’s historical aspect, we encountered intriguing Civil War earthworks that served as a testament to the region’s storied past. The echoes of history resonated through these ancient structures, offering a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us. The Columbus Cemetery was an unexpected find, inviting us to pay our respects to the past and appreciate the cultural heritage ingrained within the park’s grounds.

A Dance with the Rain and the Warmth of the Day:
While the weather was predominantly hot, a few raindrops graced our journey, adding a refreshing touch to the experience. Nature’s ever-changing moods only enhanced the sense of adventure, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of the park in different light. Cherished Moments with Winston and Suze:
Our canine companions, Winston and Suze, were the heart and soul of our journey. Their boundless energy and enthusiasm added an element of playfulness and love to every step we took. As much as we cherished our time with them, we also learned to be vigilant, as they encountered a few ticks along the way. However, their presence enriched our adventure, and we couldn’t have imagined exploring Suwannee River State Park without them.

Florida Caverns State Park

Welcome to the second stop of our exciting two-week trip! Our journey led us to the beautiful Florida Caverns State Park, where we stayed at the delightful Blue Hole Campground from July 18th for four unforgettable nights. Amidst the scorching heat and ongoing construction, we discovered a hidden gem filled with natural wonders, wildlife encounters, and fascinating cave explorations.
Blue Hole Campground Experience:
We arrived at the relatively small (32 sites) Blue Hole Campground and luckily we had secured the best site of them all! While the lack of shade (no trees) made the days a little sweltering, the full hook-up, laundry facilities, and reliable Internet connection provided us with essential comforts.
Encounters with Nature:
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the refreshing and enchanting Blue Hole Springs. A short walk through lush bushes led us to this picturesque spot, where the river’s high waters added a touch of grandeur. As we strolled along the banks, we had the pleasure of observing a water snake gracefully gliding through the crystal-clear waters. Surprisingly, we also encountered numerous adorable bunnies hopping around, adding a touch of whimsy to our exploration.
Adventures in the Caverns:
Venturing into the Florida Caverns was a mesmerizing experience. Descending into the cool underground realm, we were in awe of the ancient stalactites and stalagmites that adorned the cave ceilings and floors. The magical atmosphere felt straight out of a fairytale. To our delight, we spotted a tiny bat hanging peacefully from the cave’s ceiling, showcasing the incredible diversity of life even in these dark and remote spaces.
Surviving the Heat:
While the Blue Hole Campground offered various trails for exploration, the relentless summer heat made us opt for a more relaxed itinerary. We contented ourselves with the breathtaking Blue Hole Springs and the captivating Caverns. However, we do recommend visiting during cooler months if you’re an avid hiker seeking to traverse the park’s beautiful trails.
Final Thoughts:
Our four-day escapade at Florida Caverns State Park was a remarkable adventure filled with natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and awe-inspiring cave formations. The sweltering heat and construction were minor setbacks in comparison to the joy and wonderment we experienced during our stay. Big Lagoon State Park

On July 23rd, 2023, we went to Big Lagoon State Park. As the summer heat enveloped us, we were eager to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of nature. Our three-night stay at Site number 71 turned out to be a memorable experience filled with breathtaking sights and encounters with fascinating wildlife.
Nature’s Refuge:
Big Lagoon State Park, located in a pristine coastal environment, proved to be an oasis of calm amid the bustling world. Despite the relentless heat, the shade offered by Site 71 provided us much-needed respite. The soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze and the occasional rain showers further heightened the allure of the natural setting.
An Enchanting Boardwalk:
A highlight of our trip was the delightful boardwalk that led us down to the Lagoon. This winding pathway seemed like a portal to another world, revealing an astonishing view of the sparkling lagoon waters. As we strolled along the boardwalk, we were captivated by the serenity of the surrounding landscape. The calm waters mirrored the clear blue skies above, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
Sandy Trails and Wildlife Encounters:
The park’s sandy trails beckoned us to explore further, and we eagerly obliged. The trails meandered through the natural wilderness.
The bunnies and rodents that Winston loved to watch feed outside our trailer and the wonderful birds including the Eastern Towee, doves, and numerous Cardinals graced us with their presence, their vibrant plumage adding splashes of color to the natural canvas. It was a truly immersive experience, feeling like we were part of a living tapestry of life within the park.

Although the lack of full hookups and laundry facilities might deter some, we embraced the simplicity of our camping experience. The absence of modern amenities encouraged us to bond with nature on a deeper level. The internet connection, albeit good, took a back seat as we relished the opportunity to disconnect from our digital lives and reconnect with the world around us.

A Blissful Escape to St. George Island State Park: Sun, Sand, and Serenity

In the scorching summer of 2023, my wife, our two adorable dogs, Winston and Suze, and I embarked on a memorable journey to St. George Island State Park RV Park. With our spirits high and excitement bubbling, we set out for a two-night retreat in this tranquil haven, nestled at the end of an enchanting barrier island. Let me take you through the delightful experience of our sun-soaked adventure, where we reveled in sandy beaches, mesmerizing sunsets, and the joys of nature.

Arriving at Site Number 43:
As we reached the RV park on July 25th, 2023, we were greeted by the soothing shade of pine trees that formed a refreshing canopy over our site. The weather was indeed hot, but the allure of the park’s natural beauty beckoned us to explore. With our RV parked snugly, we were ready to embrace the serenity that awaited us.

A Walk in the Pine Tree Forest:
One of the first adventures we embarked on was a short stroll along a trail behind the playground. Despite the heat, we were eager to reach the boardwalk overlooking the lush marshland. Nature enthusiasts would have loved the trail, but pesky flies made the journey a bit challenging. Nevertheless, the picturesque views from the boardwalk made it all worth it.

The Hidden Gem – Secret Beach:
Feeling adventurous, we discovered a hidden gem behind the Interpretive Activity area – a secret beach that offered breathtaking vistas of the Apalachicola Bay. The short walk to this secluded spot was rewarded with the most incredible sunsets we had ever witnessed. The mesmerizing blend of vibrant hues painted across the sky left us in awe and provided the perfect backdrop for precious moments with our loved ones.

Exploring the Dog-Friendly Beach:
As dog lovers, we couldn’t miss the chance to let Winston and Suze frolic in the surf. We drove about 3 miles to a dog-friendly beach that allowed our furry companions to run free and splash in the crystal-clear waters. Watching them play and enjoy the beach filled our hearts with joy, making it a highlight of our trip.

Beach Bliss and Dune Adventures:
The crown jewel of St. George Island State Park was undoubtedly the 9-mile stretch of pristine beaches and dunes. The untouched beauty of the beach offered a sense of peace and tranquility, allowing us to unwind completely.
